A Boozy Myth?

Resveratrol

Celebrating, or, looking for an excuse to pop the cork? When it comes to linking wine and heart-health, it’s essential to read between the lines. First off, what may make wine beneficial for cardiovascular health and cancer prevention are antioxidants such as flavonoids or resveratrol (a non-flavonoid antioxidant), which are found in the skins of red grapes only, not white grapes. So if you’re looking to reap the potential health benefits of wine, ditch the Chardonnay and reach for a glass of Syrah instead.

Many studies claim that resveratrol may have the potential to raise levels of HDL (high-density lipoprotein) otherwise known as “good cholesterol,” protect the lining of arteries in the heart from damage, and reduce the risk of blood clotting and blood vessel inflammation, which are often associated with heart disease. Most of the studies related to resveratrol and heart health, however, have been conducted on mice, hot humans, so there is little verifiable evidence that red wine is in fact beneficial to the human heart.

Secondly, the amounts of resveratrol found in a single bottle of red wine are minute to say the least, so claims that drinking red wine will help in preventing cancer seem quite unsubstantiated. You’d have to consume hundreds of gallons of red wine annually for the resveratrol to have any sort of cancer fighting influence on your health, and that extreme level of wine consumption brings forth an entirely different health threat – the excessive intake of alcohol.

Often, it’s the potential health benefits of wine help people justify a daily glass of Cabernet.

"It has been my pleasure to work as a colleague of Tina Morse. Among the strengths that I have consistently observed while working with Tina (in treatment team), is her ability to balance rapid assessment of the problem to the formulation and implementation of the treatment plan, while maintaining the ability to be an empathetic and sensitive listener. Tina intuitively understands what the client struggles with in terms of family of origin issues, current stressors, emotional states, social networks, physical health, coping skills, and interpersonal conflict. I recommend her without reservation.”
