Ringing In Ears

It may be more than the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Stop the hum and experience natural relief of tinnitus through healthy food and nutrition.

The phrase “driven to distraction” could have been coined with tinnitus sufferers in mind. Tinnitus, which stems from damage to the cochlea, causes a ringing, humming, or buzzing sound in the ear. Tinnitus is surprisingly common; according to the Mayo Clinic, it affects as many as one in five people. The lucky ones experience tinnitus sporadically, while others are tormented by it constantly, affecting their ability to concentrate, carry on conversations, and even sleep. For those people, tinnitus is often accompanied by depression and anxiety.

Unfortunately, there is no permanent cure for tinnitus. However, there are a number of treatments, including acupuncture, hearing aids, and one device that’s actually worn inside the ear to produce low-level white noise. Some psychotherapists have had luck retraining sufferers to ignore the noise.

Many people swear by a treatment that anyone can implement right at home: a healthy diet and good nutrition together play a big role in healthy hearing. Both medical practitioners and patients recommend the following vitamins and supplements for improving symptoms of tinnitus:

Many experts agree that zinc plays a big role in healthy hearing. A study by the University of Michigan showed that, of tinnitus sufferers who had low zinc levels, twenty-five percent experienced significant improvement after adding more zinc to their diets. Foods that are high in zinc include:

  • Wheat germ
  • Beef and lamb
  • Oysters
  • Sesame seeds
  • Spinach
  • Cashews
  • Pumpkin seeds

Vitamin A

The cochlea, the part of the inner ear that is the source of tinnitus, stores a large amount of Vitamin A, and the ear needs that reservoir for healthy hearing. Increasing the amount of Vitamin A in the diet has been shown to improve tinnitus symptoms. Good sources of Vitamin A include tuna and spinach, as well as orange fruits and vegetables like:

  • Yams
  • Carrots
  • Pumpkin
  • Cantaloupe

Tinnitus occurs when the nerves of damaged hairs in the inner ear misfire. Magnesium is crucial to proper nerve function, so it’s easy to see why treating a magnesium deficiency can reduce symptoms of tinnitus. A lack of magnesium can also constrict blood vessels, which reduces blood flow to the inner ear. Good dietary sources of magnesium include:

  • Brown rice
  • Bananas
  • Beans
  • Oats

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is essential to proper nerve function, and a deficiency affects all of the senses: taste, touch, vision, and hearing. Not surprisingly, many tinnitus sufferers have low levels of vitamin B12. Good dietary sources of B12 include:

  • Lean meats
  • Fish
  • Eggs
  • Dairy

Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo Biloba is a favorite supplement among tinnitus sufferers. Like magnesium, it facilitates blood flow to the inner ear, improving nerve performance and thereby reducing the sounds associated with tinnitus.  Rather than being consumed as part of a regular diet, ginkgo biloba is taken as a supplement.

Tinnitus can be extremely debilitating in terms of both lost sleep and peace of mind. It’s like having a constant lawn mower outside your window. You can tolerate it for a while if you know it’s eventually going to stop. But, for tinnitus sufferers, it doesn’t stop. It interferes in every day living and often drives people to distraction. Fortunately, a few simple dietary changes could vastly improve the quality of life for those with tinnitus.

"It has been my pleasure to work as a colleague of Tina Morse. Among the strengths that I have consistently observed while working with Tina (in treatment team), is her ability to balance rapid assessment of the problem to the formulation and implementation of the treatment plan, while maintaining the ability to be an empathetic and sensitive listener. Tina intuitively understands what the client struggles with in terms of family of origin issues, current stressors, emotional states, social networks, physical health, coping skills, and interpersonal conflict. I recommend her without reservation.”
