Preventing And Reversing Diabetes

In this article, Tom Corson-Knowles helps educate and share ways to prevent and reverse diabetes.  No matter what your family history is, …it often comes down to what you are eating and making life-style changes that support you.

According to the World Diabetes Congress, over 33% of Americans will have full-blown diabetes by the year 2030. We’re already seeing an epidemic of diabetes in children too. We’re seeing type 2 diabetes in teenagers and even in 6 and 7 year olds!

When my parents were both in medical school 40 years ago, that was completely unheard of! Type 2 Diabetes used to be called “Adult Onset Diabetes” because it was ONLY seen in adults. Then doctors had to change the name of the disease to Type 2 Diabetes as more and more young children began to get the disease.

In just 40 years diabetes has gone from an uncommon disease only affecting adults to an epidemic affecting over 9% of Americans – and in 18 more years, over one third of Americans will have diabetes. If the trend continues, how long will it be until over 90% of Americans have diabetes?

We Need To Change Diabetes Treatment

Today, the medical system looks at diabetes as simply a disease to treat and manage. It’s “incurable” according to most doctors. Yet every year thousands of people who once had diabetes completely reverse it by changing their lifestyle – eating healthier, managing stress and exercising. There are many documented cases of patients who have reversed diabetes.

How do they do it?

Well, there’s a common thread among patients and doctors who advocate for diabetes prevention and reversal. They all focus on diet and good nutrition.

Nutrition Tips For Diabetics

  • Avoiding processed foods (white sugar, white flour, packaged foods, etc.)
  • Avoid artificial sweeteners
  • Avoid high amounts of animal protein (limit dairy and meat consumption)
  • Eat lots of fruits and vegetables (7-13 servings a day)
  • Eat lots of whole foods – fruits, veggies, berries, whole grains, legumes (beans), nuts and seeds
  • Avoid trans fats (on food labels they appear as “hydrogenated oil” or “partially hydrogenated oil”)
  • Avoid artificial ingredients like preservatives, food dyes, etc.
  • Exercise and Stress Management

Healthy exercise and stress management can also help play a role in diabetes prevention and reversal. Many experts suggest that exercise and stress management can help lower cortisol levels and other stress hormones, allowing the body to have a better hormone balance. Since insulin is a hormone and plays a key role in diabetes, it’s likely that better hormone balance will help improve diabetes outcomes.

At the end of the day, whether you have diabetes or some other disease, you have to realize that YOU and you alone are in control of your health.
