Oral Fixation

I find it fascinating that the father of modern psychoanalysis loved the cigar, …given his personal fixation at the oral stage.  Among Sigmund Freud’s most popular theories, is that we see the world based on how we are nurtured, and whether or not we were breastfed or sufficiently satisfied as an infant.  According to Freud, orally frustrated and traumatized babies grow up to be envious, bitingly sarcastic, pessimistic and suspicious. The orally fixated need to keep their mouths occupied through eating, drinking, sucking, nail-biting, chewing, or talking.  In contrast to the satiated, or, the overindulged who (according to his theory), become excessively optimistic and gullible (passively swallowing anything), they are full of admiration for others.

In the physical sense, the throat chakra is also associated with the mouth and teeth.  An overactive 5th Chakra indicates an excessive energy flow and an imbalance in this area is linked to: arrogance, self-righteousness and pomposity.  A blockage in this area may mean that a person is unable to take in new ideas, or nourishment; or they may have difficulty expressing their personal thoughts and feelings.

In 1923, Sigmund Freud was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma.  He suffered from oral cancer and tobacco angina for over 16 years, but he refused to quit smoking.  Freud underwent 34 surgical procedures, and grew overly dependent on his daughter, Anna.  The pain of wearing an ill-fitting prosthetic (after the surgical removal of his upper jaw and palate) drove him to physician-assisted suicide, in 1939.

Freud’s Last Session is a play that highlights the psychological and theological debate between Freud and C.S. Lewis (over the existence of GOD), just a few months before he died.

"It has been my pleasure to work as a colleague of Tina Morse. Among the strengths that I have consistently observed while working with Tina (in treatment team), is her ability to balance rapid assessment of the problem to the formulation and implementation of the treatment plan, while maintaining the ability to be an empathetic and sensitive listener. Tina intuitively understands what the client struggles with in terms of family of origin issues, current stressors, emotional states, social networks, physical health, coping skills, and interpersonal conflict. I recommend her without reservation.”
